NASA has fallen prey to the incorrect progressive and liberal interpretation of the establishment clause...

NASA has barred the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Praise and Worship Club from using the word “Jesus” in their JSC Today newsletter announcements.

The Praise and Worship Club has been meeting for over 14 years and gives NASA employees at the Johnson Space Center an opportunity to pray and worship together. They’ve never had any issues with censorship in the past. But in May 2015 they asked to put the following advertisement in the the “Today” newsletter:

Join with the praise and worship band “Allied with the Lord” for a refreshing set of spring praise and worship songs on Thursday, June 4, from 11:15 a.m. to noon in Building 57, Room 106. (The theme for this session will be “Jesus is our life!”) Prayer partners will be available for anyone who has need. All JSC civil servants and contractors are welcome.

NASA took offense at the club’s use of the word “Jesus.” They blocked the ad and the club received an order to stop using the word Jesus in all future advertisements.

According to the club’s attorney from the Liberty Institute, Jeremy Dys, the club leaders were told that “NASA would be censoring all future club announcements that featured the name, ‘Jesus’.”

This is religious discrimination and it runs contrary to our Constitutionally protected freedom of religion.

The club even offered to include a disclaimer that the ad was not endorsed by NASA, but their request was still denied.

As Todd Starnes points out in The Stream, “NASA’s behavior is quite frankly baffling. On Christmas Eve, 1968 — the crew of Apollo 8 read the Creation story as they orbited the moon. Astronauts Jim Lovell, Frank Borman and Bill Anders took turns reading from the Book of Genesis. NASA defended the astronauts after atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair filed a federal lawsuit. The Supreme Court dismissed the suit due to lack of jurisdiction. And astronaut Buzz Aldrin received communion on the lunar surface during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission.”

The Petition

Stop Censorship and Apologize to the JSC Praise and Worship Club

I recently became aware of NASA's censorship of the word “Jesus” in the JSC Today Newsletter. This censorship is both inappropriate and unconstitutional.

Please apologize to the Praise and Worship Club of the Johnson Space Center and allow them to use the name of Jesus in their publications.  I ask that NASA stop this unconstitutional censorship and wrong interpretation of our First Amendment right of freedom of religion.

Sincerely,
