Indiana Governor Mike Pence

Update: Indiana Governor Mike Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act “clarification” into law. The new law holds Christian business owners criminally liable for refusing service to LGBT people. This would include forcing Christian business owners to violate their religious convictions by asking them to participate in same-sex ceremonies.

We need your urgent help. Sign our petition calling on Indiana state lawmakers and Governor Pence to support conscience rights of Christian business owners in Indiana.

In a matter of 1 day everything has changed. After Governor Mike Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) into law, we asked you to sign a petition in support of the law because it reaffirmed the God-given, Constitutionally-protected right of religious freedom.

Under the original RFRA, the state government would have to demonstrate a compelling state interest before curtailing religious freedom. Unless the government can show that their law is the least burdensome means of achieving a legitimate state interest, they cannot unduly force individuals (including business owners) to violate their religious convictions.

After a week of nonstop demonization from the LGBT lobby and liberal elite types, calling a law to protect religious freedom “the new Jim Crow” law permitting discrimination against homosexuals, the state legislature along with Governor Pence caved by signing enacting the “clarification.”

The new law (“clarification”) exempts sexual orientation and gender identity laws from the Religious Freedom Restoration Act except. The allegations from the left about the RFRA are lies. The intent of the RFRA was never to discriminate against anyone for any reason, but only to prioritize legal protection for those who chose not to violate their religious convictions. In other words, Christian bakers would not have to feel obligated to bake a cake for a sex-sex wedding ceremony, instead could politely refuse citing religious convictions.

The “clarification” is not ok! Demand Indiana prioritizes the conscience rights of Christian business owners. Christian business owners should not have to feel obligated to participate in a same-sex wedding ceremony, if they feel it violates their religious beliefs, out of fear of a damaging lawsuit.

The Petition

Governor Pence: Fix the RFRA Fix

Dear Governor Pence and Members of the Indiana State Legislature:

The RFRA “fix” is a bad piece of legislation that strips the legal rights of those who hold religious values to conscientiously object from participating in an act the would violate said religious values.

Business owners should not have to feel compelled to participate in an activity, such as a same–sex wedding ceremony, that violates their religious convictions, out of fear of a damaging lawsuit.

The right to exercise one's religious faith in the public square is a God-given, Constitutionally-protected right that every American ought to enjoy.

Please fix the “fix,” by reinstating the language of the RFRA protecting religious liberty and conscience rights for business owners.
