With the nation’s news dominated by reports of political corruption (most recently, the Clintons’ apparent use of “pay to play” schemes during Hillary Clinton’s tenure as U.S. secretary of state), sexual harassment scandals pandemic among the nation’s elites, extreme vulgarization of political speech and the common culture, riots against freedom of speech on the nation’s college campuses, paralyzing partisanship in Congress, death threats and open assassination attempts against government leaders and police officers, and the rest of the dismaying parade of moral shortcomings on display among the nation’s leaders in all walks of life, it appears that we are in

The Police Murder of Daniel Shaver

Submitted 6 years ago by ActRight Community

If you have the stomach for it, I want you to watch one of the most outrageous and infuriating videos I’ve ever seen. It shows the police shooting of Daniel Shaver in Mesa, Arizona. He was crawling on his hands and knees, crying, and begging police not to shoot him. An officer shot him anyway: The background is simple. Shaver was a traveling pest control worker. He was in his hotel room (a La Quinta Inn) showing off to guests a pellet gun he used for work. Police responded to a 911 call claiming that a man was pointing a rifle out a window. When police arrived, Shaver was alone with a woman. They had been drinking ...

D arkest Hour, Joe Wright’s recent film, vividly describes the closing days of May 1940, when Adolf Hitler’s blitzkrieg swept over western Europe. In Britain, despite overwhelming odds, Winston Churchill convinced his country to fight on. It is an excellent film — both historically accurate and dramatically taut. And Gary Oldman’s portrayal of Churchill far exceeds many of those we’ve seen in recent years. But the nature of the film means that viewers necessarily miss out on fascinating background and details. Happily, there are many good books on those frightening few days that offer a broader picture than the film. If

God Save the Queen

Submitted 6 years ago by ActRight Community

For decades it’s been received wisdom among the smart set of Guardian-reading Londoners that the monarchy is a bit silly, wasteful, embarrassing, and outdated. Private Eye, the fortnightly mix of muckraking and satire that epitomizes left-wing cynicism, styles Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles as “Brenda” and “Brian” to reduce them to comical tabloid figures. The snobbery arrow has been reversed, with the actors and journalists and intellectuals considering the royal family a bit dim and regrettable. Yet a traitor has emerged from the chattering class ...
