The ratings for the National Football League are being watched closely to see if political controversies and boycotts are making a dent against the television behemoth. And the ratings for the first Sunday of the season are in.
Thursday night kick-off flounders
The opening day kick-off game of the 2018 NFL season did very poorly in the ratings. According to Deadline, the opening game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons fell in ratings by 13 percent from the season opener last year.
That is also the worst the opening game has done since nearly a decade in 2009.
Some pointed to the fact that the game started an hour late as part of the reason for the fall in ratings.
Sunday games show an increase
Despite the poor showing of the first game, the NFL did much better for the first Sunday of the 2018 season.

Shh! One of the U.S. Senate candidates backed out of a scheduled debate but could we just forget about that and move on to other matters? That seems to be the reacton of the Texas Tribune to the news that the Democrat candidate in the Senate race to unseat incumbent Ted Cruz, Beto O'Rourke, backed out of a scheduled debate set for August 31. Since then, it has been treated as a rather minor matter by a periodical whose main shtick is Texas politics.

Jon Voight, Academy Award-winning actor and outspoken Trump supporter, cried during an interview with Fox News' Mark Levin on Sunday night when discussing an encounter he had with a conservative woman on a plane.
What are the details?
While speaking with Levin on "Life, Liberty & Levin," the 79-year-old Voight choked up and cried while discussing his support for President Donald Trump's America.
Detailing an encounter the actor recently had with an unnamed conservative woman while traveling, Voight said that he asked the woman her thoughts on "our man," meaning the president, and instead of responding vocally, she reportedly placed her hand across her heart.
As Voight detailed the encounter to Levin, he became visibly emotional as he emulated the woman's motion of placing her hand on her chest.
"That's me crying," Voight explained. "The gesture was so beautiful, she couldn't even speak. She was just saying 'Thank God.' And I say 'Thank God.'"
